Logan Energy’s MobileHRS Accelerates Maritime Sector Decarbonisation

Home > News & Insights

Logan Energy’s innovative mobile hydrogen refuelling system, MobileHRS, is returning to the Port of Leith in Edinburgh as part of a £1.1 million initiative to reduce emissions in the maritime sector.

Following the success of Innovate UK’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition 4 (CMDC4) – where Logan Energy, Waterwhelm, PlusZero Power, and Targe Towing Limited collaborated to produce, store, and utilise green hydrogen for shore power – the new CMDC6 project will take the next step: enabling the refuelling of hydrogen-powered vessels directly at the Port.

In a circular approach to sustainability, Waterwhelm will harness the heat generated by the hydrogen internal combustion engine to treat wastewater from a nearby facility, producing freshwater for green hydrogen production at the Port.

The advancing Green Hydrogen Production for Shore Power and Vessel Refuelling at the Port of Leith project is funded by UK Government through the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme in the Department for Transport. UK SHORE has allocated over £230m since 2022 to develop the technologies necessary to decarbonise the UK maritime sector and capture the economic growth opportunity of the transition. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is the main delivery partner for UK SHORE interventions.

Leith isn’t the only location where MobileHRS is making an impact. Logan Energy is also working with Latent Drive, the University of Exeter, and Portland Port to demonstrate Latent Drive’s SeaStack electrolyser at Portland Port.

MobileHRS delivers hydrogen at 300bar, 350bar, or 450bar, from inlet pressures as low as 10bar. Several units are already operational, with more in development. For hiring or purchasing enquiries, please email info@loganenergy.com.
