Hy-Met Limited is poised to revolutionise the way in which vehicles can be sustainably and cost-effectively fuelled with hydrogen.
The Midlands-based SME will work in partnership with Logan Energy and WMG, University of Warwick to deliver the Hydrogen Prototype Equipment for Refuelling (HyPER) project.
Together, the consortium will develop a next-generation hydrogen flowmeter for refuelling Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). These will be used for hydrogen refuelling systems, and will be lightweight, smaller, more cost effective and more accurate than existing instruments.
This follows recent funding from the UK Government’s Department of Transport zero emission road freight trials through Innovate UK. The project value totals around £170,000.
The new meter will also be easier to manufacture and maintain than current options on the market.
The project aims to reduce the cost of hydrogen refuelling and enable the wider adoption of hydrogen by transport fleets and other users.
Hy-Met is focused on addressing key challenges faced by the transition to a sustainable energy system. With over 30 years of experience in ultrasonic flow measurement and device design, Hy-Met needed additional skills and knowledge in advanced manufacturing and hydrogen refuelling to combine with their own to tackle the challenge of efficiently and accurately refuelling hydrogen fuelled HGVs.

Wallyford-based Logan Energy design, install, commission and maintain Integrated Energy Systems across the UK and Europe. Logan Energy was founded in 2005 and has worked on schemes including hydrogen refuelling stations in Edinburgh and Belfast, hydrogen ferries for Orkney, lower-carbon whisky distilleries for Benbecula and Arbikie, and the Levenmouth Community Energy Project.

WMG at the University of Warwick is an international leader in collaboration between academia and the private and public sectors, driving innovation in applied science, technology and engineering. The advanced additive manufacturing expertise and capability within WMG was well aligned to the demands of the HyPER project.
